uMfolozi Municipality honours Siyabonga Sangweni Sports Tournament winners

uMfolozi Municipality held a prize-giving ceremony for the different sports codes and artists who took part in the Siyabonga Sangweni Sports Tournament at the uMfolozi Municipality Hall, the event was held on Friday, 31 July 2015.

uMfolozi Municipal Manager Mr Khulumokwakhe Gamede, congratulated the winners and artists that performed and pointed out that the tournament was just a build up to the annual SALGA Games. He went on to encourage athletes by highlighting the fact that Siyabonga Sangweni also participated in the SALGA Games and today he is playing for Orlando Pirates. The Municipal Manager went on to say that the Municipality will continue to promote and develop the youth through sports, since sports also helps to entrench discipline and keep the youth focused.
Addressing the crowd present, His worship the Mayor, Cllr Smangaliso Mgenge observed a moment of silence for the late uThungulu District Municipality Deputy Mayor, Cllr Thulani Mashaba, who recently died in a tragic car accident. Mayor Mgenge said Deputy Mayor Mashaba had always supported the tournament and encouraged the development of Dondotha. Mayor Mgenge said Mashaba’s legacy of wanting the people of KwaMthethwa to prosper and develop will live on and become a reality, “Mashaba has spoken to a number of different investors to come and invest in Dondotha and those investors are now interested in seeking development in the area,” said the Mayor.
Mayor Mgenge continued to emphasize that sports is universal and unites people from all corners of life. “When we look at Siyabonga Sangweni today one cannot believe that he started playing right here on the dusty outskirts of Dondotha, but look at him now, you, who took part in this tournament can be that great also,” said the Mayor. He also encouraged the winning teams to buy sports kits with their prize monies and not use it recklessly, “A sports kit will contribute towards your future for the better and position you towards achieving your dreams. Alcohol on the other side will only contribute towards destroying those dreams,” said the Mayor.
Mayor Mgenge also thanked the Municipal staff, donors and stakeholders for organising this year’s event and putting in the extra hours to make it another success.
