Siyabonga Sangweni Sports Tournament a success “Sports is Life”
The Siyabonga Sangweni Sports Tournament held at the KwaDondotha spotsfield in uMfolozi was a huge success. The three day sporting fiesta, which took place from 19 June – 21 June 2015, saw 16 soccer teams across the area of uThungulu District Municipality and eight schools teams in uMfolozi battle it out for the title of being called the champions in soccer, netball, Induku and Boxing.
In the soccer tournament, Tigers Football Flub claimed the champion’s title by beating Sokhulu Football Club in a heart stopping final. uYengwa High school were also victorious in soccer and Welabasha High School netball team beating the rest to win the tournament.
The crowds were also treated to an exciting match between Orlando Pirates FC legends against uKhozi Fm staff, the stations presenter Khathide “Tshatha” Ngobe stunned the legends with a goal that wowed the crowds, claiming a one nil victory for uKhozi against the soccer legends.
uMfolozi Mayor, the honourable councillor Smanga Mgenge said the tournament was created in the name of Siyabonga Sangweni to show the youth of uMfolozi that hard work and discipline does create a better life, “Sangweni is the greatest example to the youth of uMfolozi that hard work truly does pay off, he has always been a focused and determined person even as a young boy and Siyabonga is now teaching our youth to follow in his footsteps,” said the Mayor.
The Man of the Moment Siyabonga Sangweni said for the past three years the tournament has helped shape the lives and futures of many young soccer players in the area. “Many young players have been noticed by the big ertain clubs and are now playing in some of the soccer main divisions within the soccer league. I also have players in my own team Dondotha All-stars,” said Sangweni.
Mayor Mgenge said that it was his vision to see a sports development academy being built right on the dusty sports field of KwaDondotha to develop the future sport stars of uMfolozi.
KwaDondotha Ward 9 Councillor Fuyinkomo Mpungose praised the tournament and thanked Siyabonga Sangweni for inspiring the people of KwaDondotha, “Sangweni played right on this very field of KwaDondotha and worked hard to become a success, he is a truly inspirational and proves that that anything is possible even for the children born in the dusty roads of Dondotha,” said Mpungose.
Municipality and Government stakeholders were present to witness the tournament as well as Orlando Pirates legends along with some members of the current Orlando Pirates FC which included Kermit Erasmus, Ayanda Ngcaba, Thandani Ntshumayelo and Helder Pelembe.
Local and national artists entertained the crowds while the competitions continued.
