Mayoral Matric excellent awards 2014

Congratulations to the 2014 Matric Class!!

The uMfolozi Municipality in partnership with the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education and Richards Bay Mine (RBM) hosted the Mayoral Matric Excellence Awards on the 20 January 2015 at uMfolozi Municipality Hall.

The Mayor Cllr S W Mgenge awarded the top 10 performing students from the class of 2014 in the area of KwaMbonambi with bursaries for their outstanding performance. The event was filled with joy and excitement as the Mayor presented the awards to learners from KwaMbonambi. The mayor further honoured the students with sponsored bursaries, laptops, vouchers and certificates from Richards Bay Mine.

In his speech the Mayor encouraged and emphasized the Premier’s 2015 vision for the academic year. He said both teachers and learners need to work together to obtain impressive results.

“Education is key in creating a society that is dynamic and productive because learning can unlock the treasure that lies within us all. A good education will provide our children access to our country’s rich and diverse culture, its history and an understanding of its place in the world. Education offers opportunities to gain insight into the best that has been thought, said and done”, said the Mayor, Cllr Mgenge.

The children who benefitted from this programme came from destitute families and are really going to benefit from this programme. This year’s top ten students will be awarded bursaries from the Municipality and RBM. RBM presented the top 3 students with laptops and bursaries of R20 000 towards the student registration fee in various higher learning institutions. The title of other top student went to the remainder of the student walking away with R6 000 vouchers to assist them with their registration fees for the year 2015.

Slindile Mahaye from Matamzana Dube High School who is now going to pursue her studies in Medicine (MBCHB) at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. In her brief speech she was thankful and appreciative as she thanked her teachers and mentors for standing by her and believing in her. She also encouraged her fellow students to concentrate on their studies, and work hard and stay focussed in order to achieve their dreams.
